Santa Fe, New Mexico (September 2018)

About ThisTrip

This was a girl's trip that we took in September 2018. The weather in Santa Fe in September was perfect and refreshing for someone who is "used to" the Dallas allergies and humidity. It was a little cool in the morning/evening and very nice in the afternoon. Bring layers! One of our trip-mates lives in Albuquerque, so we flew on Southwest Airlines from DAL-ABQ and she picked us up to drive to Santa Fe.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Santa Fe and check in to AirBnb

Lunch at Tia Sophia's - this was my favorite food in Santa Fe; order whatever you choose "Christmas style" to get the red and green sauces. Both are great.

We spend the afternoon at Meow Wolf Santa Fe. I've been to my fair share of the unfairly maligned "instagram museums." This place is so much more than that. It is a highly detailed art installation. We spent about 3 hours here, and honestly, I could have stayed longer. The House of the Eternal Return boasts 70 rooms of immersive art, all done by local artists. No trip to Santa Fe is complete without a stop here. Only one note, it was super crowded when we went and I think it might always be super crowded.

After Meow Wolf, we went to Coyote Cafe & Rooftop Cantina for drinks and dinner. And then back to the AirBnb to hang out on our patio and enjoy the weather.

Day 2

We decided to check out Ski Santa Fe. When it's not snowing, you can still ride the ski lifts to see views of Santa Fe, hike around the area, eat food, have drinks, and listen to live music. We spent awhile there, got La Boca Tapas for Dinner, and again spent time at our AirBnb in the evening.

Day 3

We tried to go to Cafe Pasqual's three times before we finally made it in (super long lines). This place is POPULAR. After that, we drove about 45 minutes west to hike Kasha Katuwe Tent Rocks. This was an amazing hike - absolutely beautiful and highly recommend. (Note: Tent Rocks closed in 2020 due to COVID and has still not re-opened in 2024. Check the web site before planning to do this - Bandelier National Monument is a nice second option.)

Day 4

Brunch at the Palacio Cafe and travel day home.

Maui, Hawaii (Spring 2025)

About this Trip We took this trip for Spring Break 2025—two adults and two kids, ages 9 and 13. Overall, there wasn’t a lot of advanced planning involved beyond booking our flights, accommodations, and a rental car. We did lock in our fishing expedition a couple of weeks ahead, and if you’re planning to visit Waiʻānapanapa State Park during your drive on the Road to Hana, I’d recommend reserving your spot at least a day or two in advance. If catching the sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā is on your list, be sure to reserve that well ahead of time—like months in advance. I’d also suggest booking a luau early since, while there are plenty of options, they tend to fill up quickly. Everything else we did was super easy to book, often the day of or just a day or two before. (Oh, and we ended up skipping the sunrise at Haleakalā this time around. Next trip!) Stay & Flight We flew Southwest Airlines from Dallas on a 4-hour flight to OAK, where we had a quick connection before head...

Northern New Mexico (May 2024)

Northern New Mexico (May 2024) About this Trip We took this trip right after school got out in late May. We flew Southwest Airlines into Albuquerque and stayed at a friend's casita. Since most of the activities we did were free, this was a pretty inexpensive getaway. I did purchase the Meow Wolf and Sandia peak tickets in advance, but not a lot of other advanced planning was needed.

Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, and Guadelupe Mountains National Park (March 2024)

About this Trip We took this road trip for Spring Break 2024 with our kids 12 and 8. Our focus was to see three national parks: Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, and Guadelupe Mountains. This was a lot of fun, and did not require advance planning outside of general logistics except: 1. Get the Carlsbad reservations in advance. 2. If you want to do the peak or Devil's Summit at Guadelupe Mountains on Spring Break, start very early in the day or there will be nowhere to park.
